I am about to be laid off fom a company that I have
been employed by for the last 17 years. Needless to say I am somewhat
intimidated by the whole interviewing/psychological testing
processes(not to mention having to put together a resume after all of
these years). But I have found this site to be a great aid in preparing me for the inevitable. I have managed to construct a fairly
successful resume(I have had a few hits and have three interviews coming up over the next two weeks and have just been interviewed the other day by a local company{I live in a small town that will not be able to absorb all of my fellow workers so we are all competing but also realize that a move to another town/province will happen}).
I have an interview coming up that will be conducted over the
telephone. There will be two HR personnel, one Production
Supervisor(my direct boss) and one other person. It would be nice to have an idea or heads up as to whether this type of interview differs and how.
Also, it is my intent to possibly have a choice of jobs, hence my
sending resumes to many places that I would have some(or lots
of)interest in working...is this wise?

You should always treat a telephone interview in the same manner that you would a face-to-face interview. You should prepare thoroughly - researching the company and the job (as much as possible). Prepare your answers to the questions that they are likely to ask you (see http://www.bradleycvs.co.uk/interview/index.htm). You should also think of some questions to ask them (see http://www.bradleycvs.co.uk/interview/intqask.htm).

There are certainly some differences between a telephone interview and a face-to-face interview. This will be especially true if there are going to be several other people on the line at the same time - as they may interrupt one another. Try and remain calm at all times and speak clearly. There are some advantages of a telephone interview: you can be more relaxed as you don't have to dress up or travel and you can sit in a comfy chair!

Regarding sending out your CV: It is always a good idea to send out your CV to a number of companies and agencies. Be very careful when you send your CV out to agencies that you get them to call you first before sending out your CV to a client company - you don't want your CV arriving on the same company's desk more than once.

Good luck with your interview and job hunting.

HI,

Many thanks for your reply. I have gone through the telephone interview and it went well. I have been added to their "hotlist" and will be flown to their particular location for a more formal interview. So, all is good so far.

I must add too though, I have received about 7 hits on my resume\CV(I actually combined the two together and it is at the very least getting me interviews)out of about 12 companies that I have submitted them to. So, I have another 6 interviews. That was what I was referring to in my previous post when I asked about sending too many out. I now have to juggle the interview dates so that they do not concide with the other ones.
It is my wish to hopefully be given offers for as many as possible and
choose the best one for myself and my family. Now that I have the interviews rolling in the next step is to be able to impress them with my skills, something I need to work on especially seeing that I can be a little intimated by groupls of people staring at me and putting me on the proverbial hot seat.

thank again,

Congratulations on securing 7 interviews.

Being interviewed will come more easily - the more interviews you have.

After each interview you should list the things that you did well and the things that didn't go so well. Then go over the things that didn't go well until you've got them sorted. Don't beat yourself up though over the things that went wrong.

Going over things will allow you to improve your 'performance' at the next interview. You should also ask for feedback from companies that don't offer you a job - again, this will help you improve.

Good luck for the future.
